“All Good” by Matt Pless (2021)

Matt Pless had been bothering me for a while to make a video about him at a party. It wasn’t until he finally showed me this song that I got stoked on doing it. Immediately what came to mind was the intro from the movie Get Him to the Greek. We wanted to paint a picture of this mega rock star who dominated the music industry. Other references were Fight For Your Right by Beastie Boys and On A Boat by Lonely Island.

We began filming it in December 2019, hoping to release it by the summer. Unfortunately, the Covid pandemic happened and we decided to not release it and keep working on it until things started to look all good.

“Moments a Year From Now” by Apes of the State (2021)

Collaboration with Apes of the State. Interestingly enough, April said part of the inspiration for her was my video for “Roots” by Grumpster. A handful of my videos create a mood, more than follow a narrative. Or as I put to her, are shots of people doing mundane shit. I hope nobody steals my secret formula. Obviously part of that mood was drawn from Covid quarantine, but it was very important to us that the video be timeless; not strictly tied to this pandemic.

The idea was always to intercut our shots with archive footage of the bands performing. As I edited, I started playing around with using a lot of crossfades. This gave the video a very wispy and dreamlike feel. That seemed very appropriate as the song is about reflecting on your past, and being spacy in the present because of that.

“Dating in the Apocalypse” by Kailynn West (2020)

This is the first video I’ve filmed where the artist wasn’t in it. Perhaps no time more appropriate for that than during the pandemic. When I first heard Kailynn’s song, I got a bunch of these visual in my head of a girl going throughout her day like everything is normal, just while wearing the facemask. The idea behind this video is going through everything like it’s normal while it’s certainly not normal.

I wanted the camerawork to be very tight and condensed on her while in the home, and showing off a lot of empty space around her when she’s outside, perhaps being too on the nose in the graveyard? I also thought I was being a very clever boy with the upsidedown Amazon package with the frowny face on it.

Wow, deeply saddened by the loss of filmmaker Lynn Shelton. When I was really starting to identify my style as a filmmaker. Lynn was one of the filmmakers that I feel laid the groundwork for a wonderful style of intimate, grounded, relatable flicks....

Wow, deeply saddened by the loss of filmmaker Lynn Shelton. When I was really starting to identify my style as a filmmaker. Lynn was one of the filmmakers that I feel laid the groundwork for a wonderful style of intimate, grounded, relatable flicks. She stands shoulder to shoulder with all-time greats like Greta and the Duplass Brothers. Thanks for the wonderful movies and lasting influence.
